I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer!
I will be sharing my summer reading list with you today. I will be student teaching in the fall, and the books that I have picked to read this summer will hopefully help prepare me for my student teaching adventures.
I have chosen four books that I hope to finish this summer! They includeSecrets to Success for Beginning Elementary Teachers, The Homework Myth, The First Days of School, and Passing the PPR TExES Exam for EC-12 Teachers.
The first book is called Secrets to Success for Elementary School Teachers, by Ellen Knottler and Nancy P. Gallavan.
I bought this book at Half Priced Books a couple weeks ago, and I have managed to get through the first chapter (with college and other stuff going on). This book acts as a guide for teachers, and answers any questions that new teachers may have when starting their first job.
This book includes chapters on, organizing your classroom, getting to know your students, getting through the first day of school, developing curriculum, planning instruction and assessment, classroom management, using technology, communicating with parents, getting involved with the school, and so much more!

The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of A Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn
I bought this book at Half Priced Books, the same time I bought the previous book. I have not gotten to read it yet, but several of my college professors have recommended reading this book.
This book encourages teachers to "rethink what happens during and after school in order to rescue our children's love of learning." This book questions if homework is really necessary, and offers evidence to prove that homework does not have any academic benefits.
Barnes & Noble- $11.29
Half Priced Books- $5.99

Next on the list is, The First Days of School: How To Be An Effective Teacher by Harry and Rosemary Wong.
I bought this book about two years ago for a college class, however we briefly used it... After it sitting on my self for a couple of years, I think it deserves another chance. I have heard a lot of good things about this book, and I think there is a lot to be gained from reading this book.
The authors give you tips and advice on how to be an effective teacher, through research-based strategies on classroom management, lesson design, having positive expectations, and continuing your education with professional development.
This book mentions that it is for new and veteran teachers and it includes a DVD.
Barnes & Noble and Amazon- New about $19
Amazon has this book used for about $5.99 (Not sure if the DVD would be included in used versions).

Last on my reading list is, Passing the PPR TExES Exam for EC-12 Teachers: Keys to Certification and Ethical Teaching by Elaine L. Wilmore and Amy Burkman.
During the fall, I will need to take the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) TExES exam. I must pass this exam (among others) to become eligible for teacher certification in the state of Texas. My advisor recommended this particular study guide to all incoming student teachers to prepare for the exam next semester.
This book is written informally and includes real-life stories. I think this will be of major help with understanding the material that will be included on the exam.
Again, this study guide is for Texas teacher certification. If you are in another state, you may need to study for a different exam.
Good luck to all those who are starting their student teaching next semester!
Barnes & Noble- $34.83
